HK Dark Roasted Tie Guan Yin 香港焙火鐵觀音 - 50g

Special Release

Deeply warming and richly aromatic, this Hong Kong-style Tie Guan Yin reflects a tradition of tea processing shaped by the climate, trade routes, and roasting culture of Southern China.

Using maocha sourced from Anxi, Fujian, Fukkien Tea Company, a 70-year-old tea shop in Hong Kong and one of the few remaining custodians of traditional roasting knowledge in the city, slowly roasts this tea over 70 hours. This extended roasting transforms the floral elegance of traditional Tie Guan Yin into something darker, fuller, and more resonant. Layers of roasted nuts, dried fruit, old wood, and caramelized sweetness unfold gradually, while the tea maintains a quiet structure and remarkable depth.

The Story of Hong Kong Roasted Tie Guan Yin
In the humid climate of Southern China, darker roasted teas were traditionally valued for their warming character and their association with dispelling internal dampness. Heavily roasted teas were also better suited for storage and long sea voyages, making them an important part of Hong Kong’s historic role as a tea trading port.

Over time, this roasting style developed into a distinct regional expression, one that emphasizes depth, endurance, and transformation through fire. Today, only a handful of tea shops in Hong Kong (estimated at just 2–3) still practice traditional in-house roasting, making it part of a quietly disappearing craft.
